Women in Focus

For decades, outsiders have shaped the global portrayal of African communities, often reinforcing misrepresentation and stereotypes. But today, a powerful shift is underway—African storytellers are reclaiming their narratives. Leading this movement is Amina Mohamed, founder of Cameras for Girls, an initiative that equips young women in Uganda, Tanzania, and South Africa with photography skills, ethical storytelling techniques, and business training.

In Episode 2 of Credo Voices Season 2, Amina shares her remarkable journey. Born in Canada to a Ugandan family, she built a successful career in film, television, and finance. However, after returning to Uganda, she saw firsthand the systemic barriers that prevent women from entering media and journalism—from limited access to education and training to the lack of essential tools like cameras.

Determined to close this gap, Amina founded Cameras for Girls, providing young women with the skills and resources to take control of their own stories. Her initiative is more than just technical training—it’s a movement to challenge stereotypes, amplify authentic African voices, and reshape global perceptions of the continent.

The impact is undeniable: over 80% of Cameras for Girls graduates have secured paid jobs in the male-dominated media industry. Through her work, Amina is actively advancing Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Gender Equality) by breaking down patriarchal barriers, and Sustainable Development Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by equipping women with marketable skills that lead to financial independence.

Looking ahead, Amina is expanding her initiative across Africa, using a train-the-trainer model to ensure that graduates pass on their skills—creating a ripple effect that strengthens the media industry from within.

“Amina’s work isn’t just about training,” says Awele Okigbo, CEO of Credo Advisory. “It’s about redefining who gets to tell the story and uplifting women to share their narratives with dignity, agency, and authenticity.”

Join us as we explore Amina Mohamed’s inspiring journey and discover how Cameras for Girls transforms lives—one storyteller at a time.
