Episode Introduction

Credo Voices, the podcast where we bring you inspiring stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. I’m your host, Awele Okigbo, the CEO of Credo Advisory.

Globally, the gender gap in labor force participation has remained at 30% since 1990, with men’s participation around 80%, and women’s at 50%, according to UN Women. There can be no sustainable development without gender equality. Women are consistently underrepresented in industries like media and journalism, and in countries like Uganda, systemic barriers, such as limited education, financial constraints, and a male-dominated media landscape, make it even harder for young women to break in. But what if the right tools and training could change that?

In this episode of Credo Voices, we sit down with Amina Mohamed, founder of Cameras for Girls, an initiative equipping young women with the skills, resources, and opportunities to succeed in the media industry. Amina’s mission isn’t just about employment, equity, ethical storytelling, and shifting narratives. By advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4, quality education, SDG 5, gender equality, and SDG 8, decent work and economic growth, she’s transforming lives.

Join us as we explore how Amina is not just giving women tools for storytelling and reporting, she’s ensuring they have the power to use it .
Amina Mohamed

Ethical Photographer | Storyteller

Amina Mohamed is a storytelling advocate, media expert, and changemaker, dedicated to amplifying women’s voices in journalism and photography. With over 15 years of experience as a film and television producer, she founded Cameras for Girls in 2018—a nonprofit initiative that equips young women in East Africa with photography, storytelling, and business skills.

Her program has provided 64 young women with cameras and a year-long, four-phase curriculum, helping them break into the male-dominated media industry. She also offers free training through an online platform, creating opportunities for aspiring female journalists and photographers to share their own narratives with the world. Beyond her initiative, Amina is a leading voice in ethical storytelling, ensuring that women’s stories are told with dignity and authenticity. She has spoken on global stages, including the Vital Voices Global Leadership Summit, and has been featured in media across Canada and the U.S. For Amina, Cameras for Girls is more than a program—it’s a movement.

She is breaking barriers, transforming narratives, and shaping a future where women own their place in media.
