Peru has long faced deep unrest since the removal of President Pedro Castillo in 2022. Widespread protests and violent crackdowns have exposed long-standing inequalities, with Indigenous communities bearing the brunt. Though they make up only 13% of the population, Indigenous Peruvians account for 80% of deaths recorded in the recent crisis, according to Amnesty International.<\/p>

\u00a0As the unrest continues to ripple across the country, one woman, psychologist and activist Joanna Ter\u00e1n Romero, has returned to her roots to offer psychological care to those carrying the weight of this conflict and help reclaim her people’s voice and power.<\/p>

Originally from the Andean region of Puno, Joanna left her rural hometown to study in Lima, a path rarely taken by Indigenous women. With her training in psychology, she returned home to confront the invisible wounds left by political violence. What emerged was Colectivo Kuska<\/em>, a collective providing trauma-informed mental health services and defending the rights of Indigenous communities.<\/p>

Colectivo Kuska comprises professionals and activists with a social, feminist, and decolonial approach. Their mission is to build a more just and equitable society that centres those most affected by social, political, or economic upheaval.<\/p>

Today, the organization focuses on supporting those impacted by ongoing protests in southern Peru. They offer safe spaces for healing while also documenting the violence,<\/p>

sharing firsthand stories, and challenging state and media narratives that erase Indigenous pain and resistance.<\/p>

In this episode of Credo Voices<\/em>, we spotlight Joanna\u2019s powerful work and the movement she leads. She shares stories of resilience, solidarity, and survival from Peru\u2019s Indigenous communities, who continue to confront political repression and systemic exclusion. Through Colectivo Kuska<\/em>, Joanna provides psychological care and fosters collective action grounded in dignity and justice.<\/p>

Their mission became even more urgent during the 2022\u20132023 protests, when state forces met public dissent with lethal violence. Joanna and her team responded, offering trauma support to victims and bereaved families, organising vigils to honour the dead, and amplifying Indigenous voices that the mainstream sought to silence.<\/p>

Through her tireless advocacy, Joanna advances global goals for peace, health, and equality, particularly SDG 16<\/strong> (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), SDG 10<\/strong> (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 3<\/strong> (Good Health and Well-Being).<\/p>

\u201cJoanna\u2019s work shows us that healing is not separate from resistance, it is<\/em> resistance,\u201d says Awele Okigbo, CEO of Credo Advisory. \u201cThrough Colectivo Kuska, she is helping to redefine what justice looks like for communities long pushed to the margins.\u201d<\/p>
