Strengthening Power Sector Communications through the Power Sector Communications Team

Credo Advisory attended the monthly session of the Power Sector Communications Team (PSCT) on April 27th, 2018. The meeting was hosted by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in Abuja.

The meeting objectives were to:
• Align on power sector agency activities and updates in the past month
• Provide communications advisory and support to power sector MDAs
• Introduce Reboot – A social impact firm focused on improving journalism in Nigeria’s power sector

At the meeting, each power sector MDA representative updated participants about the activities of their organizations, ongoing projects, challenges, achievements and milestones as well as insight on their communications initiatives.

Credo Advisory’s Chief Executive, Awele Okigbo provided advisory to PSCT members on how to integrate and upscale their communications activities. She suggested the use of newsletters, webcasts and social media to promote sector achievements and channels to engage with the public. She also advised the PSCT to use more relatable stories and less technical terms in their communication products, stating that the use of human stories would resonate more with the public and have greater impact. She advised they use Pareto’s 80-20 rule in their communications. 80% of their communications should be from the human angle while 20% be technical. She stressed that this methodology should also be used in writing press releases.

Guest participant, Reboot, introduced their organization to the PSCT and discussed their primary objectives; alliance against journalist suppression, improving investigative journalism and elevating the technical sophistication of power sector reporting. They presented their service offerings to the team, particularly their mandate to improve power sector MDA’s interaction with the media to support the development of the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

The PSCT was founded by Awele Okigbo in 2013. It is the communications vehicle of Nigeria’s Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and is made up of heads of the communications department of eleven (11) power sector agencies. As part of the PSCT’s sustainability framework, the team is now facilitated by the Senior Special Adviser, Communications, to the Minister of Power, Works and Housing while Credo Advisory provides technical assistance.
